All you need is good quality materials including a rigid, airtight container with a tight-fitting lid. Freezing raisins also includes flash-freezing first, which I will explain in detail.

  • Large airtight resealable airtight freezer bag or container

Instructions

    1. Spread out the raisins on a baking tray lined with a baking sheet – Be careful to leave some space between the raisins.

    2. Place the tray in the freezer and flash-freeze for a few hours – The reason we flash-freeze is to make sure that the foodstuff does not clump together and stick to each other during the actual freezing process.

      Keep your tray with the raisins and allow it to freeze for at least a few hours. You can even leave it in the freezer overnight to be safe.

    3. Transfer into airtight freezer bag or container – Once your raisins have frozen hard, transfer them into an airtight resealable freezer bag, or a rigid freezer-safe container, whichever is more convenient.

    4. Seal carefully, label and freeze – Seal the container or freezer bag very tightly! If you are using a freezer bag, make sure to squeeze out all the air from the bag before you seal.

      If you are using a container, take a piece of cling film and cover the top of it. Then, snap the lid on tightly and securely.

  • Multiple small airtight resealable airtight freezer bags

I actually always recommend freezing raisins, or absolutely any food for that matter, in individual serving portions. 

Not only does it increase the speed of freezing, it also makes the defrosting process so much easier by allowing you to take, thaw and use exactly the amount you need at a time, without having to touch or thaw the rest and get into the whole hassle of refreezing. 

So, this method is also quite simple, and similar except till a point. You might require a little more storage space in the freezer for this, though.

  • Cling film
  • Multiple small airtight resealable airtight freezer bags or rigid freezer-safe container

In case your raisins are sugar-coated, you can simply freeze them directly while skipping the flash-freezing step.

The sugar naturally keeps them from sticking to each other and clumping during the freezing process. Allow me to go through the process in detail.

Transfer your sugar-coated raisins into multiple small airtight resealable freezer bags if you are freezing them in serving portions, or a rigid freezer-safe container, whichever is more convenient. 

Seal carefully, label and freeze

Seal the container or freezer bag very tightly! If you are using a freezer bag, make sure to squeeze out all the air from the bag before you seal. 

A vacuum sealer might be a really great investment in this regard. It helps get rid of all the excess air, making your freezer bag with the raisins inside totally airtight and safe from freezer airs and freezer burns.

How Long Can You Freeze Raisins?

Raisins can be kept in the freezer for up to 2 years. While they can technically be frozen for longer, for optimum flavor, it is advised that you eat and use up your raisins within not more than 6 months to at the most, a year.

The good thing about freezing raisins is that their texture does not undergo any large-scale changes as such when freezing or defrosting.

Therefore, it is safe to freeze raisins for extended periods of time without no worries at all.

Do note that there is no need to have to separately defrost the raisins if you are planning on using them for cooking or baking.

You can simply chuck the frozen raisins straight to the dish or baked treats and be done with it!

Can You Re-freeze Frozen Raisins?

I would not recommend re-freezing raisins at all. This is because while they do freeze very well the first time around, there is no being sure that they will retain their good texture and flavor after freezing and thawing a second time. It is best to avoid re-freezing them.

This is exactly why I recommend freezing in serving portions, it makes you avoid having to re-freeze your raisins at any cost.

This method lets you defrost and use only as much of it as you need, at a time, without having to go into the hassle of refreezing.

In case you do end up with some, it is best to discard them as the chances are that they would not be fit for consumption anymore.
